Taking Spiritual Renewal Leave June 18 – October
Focusing on the theme
Baptismal Identity and Sabbath Renewal
Faith United Methodist Church is one of two churches in the East Ohio Conference to receive a Lilly Grant for clergy and congregational renewal. This is a wonderful honor and opportunity. This brochure outlines in chronological order the honored guests and events that have been planned with support from the grant as well as other key programs for the summer and early fall are listed too. We will begin our journey at the font on June 18 and we will be joined again at the font on October 8. During my travels to Washington state, Virginia, Ireland, Scotland, and Maine, I will be collecting water samples to be put in the font on October 8. You are invited to do the same! 2-oz water collection bottles are available at the church. Upon my return, I invite you to join me for a complimentary dinner at 6:00 pm and reflections at 6:45 pm on Wednesdays October 11, 18 and 25. May this truly be a time of renewal for the church, the community, me, and my family.
Keep up with Steve's Renewal Leave Updates:
Week 1 & 2:
Last week, Pastor Steve spent time with his oldest son Eli (14) in Seattle and Mt. Rainier National Park. Together, they collected water from the Pacific Ocean where they saw whales and water from a stream on Crystal Mountain. This week, Steve will spend time in Virginia with his youngest son, Atticus (12). They will visit a place in the Blue Ridge Mountains, where Steve used to go for family reunions as a child and teenager. Both weeks have been a time for reflecting on and renewing Steve’s identity as a father.

The world is in need of renewal. Most of us would say, “Amen.” The nation craves renewal. “Preach it, sister!” The United Methodist Church requires renewal. “O, yeah…” Renewal is essential to the community of Faith UMC. “Well, there may be some here who need it.” Renewal is necessary for you and me. “Now, just a minute…you’ve gone too far.” We’re all for renewal “out there,” but when it gets too close to home, we begin to get a bit nervous. This summer is a time for us all to experience renewal. Admittedly, that will challenge me. I can easily get in my own groove and convince myself that staying there is the most faithful response. In that gap between what I can do and what I can’t or won’t is the space for God’s Spirit to work. God is always calling out to us, “Look at my new thing!” This summer I will be relying on the Holy Spirit to help me lean into that call. Won’t you join me?! - Pastor Cara
Cara serves as co-pastor with Steve at Faith UMC. Prior to serving in a co-pastorate she served for 8 years as the solo pastor at the Spencer UMC. She is looking forward to the renewal of her solo pastor identity for this brief time. Of course, she will be serving alongside so many called lay persons. We are never solo in our service – this will be an exciting time of renewal in and through the church! Cara and the boys will join Steve on some of his adventures – they are looking forward to family renewal as well.
