Education
|
Born in Akron, Ohio ( a very long time ago), Trudy has spent
all of her life in the Akron-Canton area. She is the oldest
of four children, having two younger sisters and a brother.
Trudy has spent her whole life in education-related
activities.
After graduating from
Tallmadge High School (also a long time ago), she attended
Ashland College where she received a Bachelor of Science in
Education degree. She taught first and second grade in
Tallmadge until she married and had her first child, a son
named Troy. She soon enrolled in graduate school at Akron
University and began substitute teaching. She earned her
educational certification in the fields of learning
disabilities and behavior disorders before her second son,
Trent, was born. Trudy enjoyed tutoring students privately.
When her daughter, Taryn, was born, Trudy stayed home for a
few years, enjoying the children.
In 1979, Trudy began her
career with the North Canton City Schools. Beginning as a
tutor of children with learning disabilities, Trudy worked
at Orchard Hill and Northwood Schools. She spent a year as
the psychologists' assistant before moving to Hoover High
School as a teacher of students with learning and behavior
disabilities. She enjoyed her 7 years in the classroom.
During these years she completed a Master of Arts in
Education degree from the College of Mount St. Joseph.
Additional coursework at the University of Akron allowed for
the completion of a supervision certificate.
In 1989, Trudy became the
Director of Special Education Programs for the North Canton
City Schools, a job she held until she retired in 1999.
Afterwards, she worked as a consultant for the Stark County
Educational Service Center, assigned to the Marlington Local
Schools. She also taught a course at Malone College and
supervised student teachers for Walsh University.
Trudy and her two younger
children joined Faith United Methodist Church in May, 1989.
Since that time she has served in many ways. She has enjoyed
teaching an adult Sunday School class, singing in the
Chancel Choir, teaching Disciple Bible Study, coordinating
the Alpha course, being a lay leader, and chairing several
boards and committees. She is very excited and humbled to
have been named Director of Christian Education and Youth
Ministry.
Trudy is very proud of her
three children, all of whom have graduated from college and
are gainfully employed. She is less proud of her Dalmatian,
who continues to try her patience. Trudy loves to walk for
fitness, garden, knit, attend theater/music events, and
read. She admits to having a weakness for chocolate. She
looks forward to getting to know more of the members of the
Faith Church community.

Derek Myers was born and raised in
Cuyahoga Falls. He attended Cuyahoga Falls High School, and
grew up in the youth group at the Chapel in Akron. In the
youth group he went on numerous missions’ trips, retreats, and
participated in the worship band as well as a discipleship
group.
After graduation he decided to
continue his education at Malone College, where he studied
Bible, Theology, and youth ministry, receiving his bachelor’s
degree in May of 2005. While at Malone, Derek was involved in
many different ministry areas, including summer camp ministry
for two summers at Camp Carl, the Resident Assistant of Upper
Gurney for two years, as well as interned at Canton First
Friends Church in the Jr. High for two years, and in the Sr.
High for a year and a half. Each year of internship gave him
more experiences and responsibilities in youth ministry,
including budgeting, teaching, counseling youth, leading a
mission’s trip to the Dominican Republic as well as retreats,
and working with a team of adult leaders. After three and a
half years of interning at First Friends, the sr. high youth
director resigned and Derek filled the role of the interim
director of sr. high youth for six months so that the
leadership team of the church could search for a full time
youth pastor.
Since graduation and the end of
his time at First Friends, Derek has been a Barista at
Starbucks (which provides great health benefits and free
coffee), the retreat host at Camp Carl, and a maintenance man
at Hudson Elms Nursing Home.
He is very excited to announce that he is engaged to marry in
May 2008, to his Fiancé Kelly Coleridge. They plan on living
in North Canton, where Derek currently resides, within
bicycling distance to Faith United Methodist.
If you would like to get to
know Derek more, feel free to give him a call. He loves coffee
and good conversations. |
