Book Review: Psalms of Lament, by Ann Weems
(113 pp.)
The NIV Bible introduction to Psalms
indicates, "This great collection of songs and
prayers expresses the heart and soul of humanity."
And it goes on to say, "... men and women
throughout history have come again and again to
the book of Psalms for comfort during times
of struggle and distress.. they have risen from
the depths of despair to new heights of joy and
praise, as they also discovered the power of God’s
everlasting love and forgiveness."
Have you ever felt unable to adequately express
to God your feelings and turned to the Psalms?
When I first picked up this book I thought it was
probably a compilation from Psalms of the
writings that could be categorized as "laments"
with comments by the author. But, no! Ann Weems,
drawing from the Psalms, writes her own psalms,
sharing the grief and anguish she feels over the
death of her son. Despite her pain, she affirms
her belief in God and her knowledge that God is
with her in her suffering. Her words will deeply
move anyone who has mourned. This book begs the
question, "wouldn’t it be good for each of us to
write a psalm or two of our own..." And the answer
is, "we might be better at it than we think!" Read
the Psalms of Lament by Ann Weems and be
comforted as you draw close to God through her
feelings and words. |
