The
Reading Program: Book Reviews
Stories From Below The Poverty
Line
by George Beukema (112 pp),
review by Vicki Yoder
This is one
of the most captivating books I've read! It's
written by a pastor who is a son of a pastor.
Although George's father began his ministry in a
Michigan college town, he came to feel he was
called to do urban ministry. Where did he begin
his inner city ministry? Cleveland, Ohio! Beukema
recalls his personal experiences as a young boy
whose life radically changed. He very movingly
shares, through a series of "short stories" or
"life incidents," the struggles of those he came
to know intimately as one who lived and became an
inner city kid. He tells of the urban Americans
who struggle below the poverty line and who also
experience God's grace. His stories take him into
his own inner city ministry in the Chicago area.
Two things were especially brought home to me: to
DO ministry is as important as SAYING ministry --
there is a time for both, and there are many more
reasons to represent Christ IN EVERY PLACE than
not! Read this book!
